Suicide in ages 10-24
« on: June 13, 2018, 10:17:10 am »
Our public school just sent out a public health announcement educating families about suicide stating it is the second cause of death in the ages 10-24 in this population.

TEN YEARS OLD, ugh, suicide is heart wrenching no matter the age, but I get so sad thinking that a such young child feels so much despair.

It is so awful!!

I don't remember exactly how old he was at the time but a friend of mine's oldest son 'killed himself' when he was young. It's been about 10 years he's been gone now. He was youngish, maybe 12.

p.s. I put killed himself in quotes because we're still not exactly sure what happened. From what I heard (I didn't see any of it) he was hanging from the ceiling fan, but my friend said he was in a position that looked like maybe he was playing trying to be superman and died.
Sad, very sad.

There's been others too, but this one was bad.

A girl a few towns over committed suicide a year ago due to bullying. She was 12. It's so sad.

I work in an ER that sees a lot of pysch patients and quite a few are under the age of 15. It's heartbreaking.

A friend of my daughter really concerns me. She looks so sad and depressed all of the time . I have rarely seen her smile. I have known her family for a long time and she seems to have a good home life.  I did voice my concern and I guess she is in therapy.  I pray that it helps her

I live in a middle class area.

Our school district had to address the issue of suicide as a community [the art department took on this issue] because it seems as though we are averaging 1-3 a year for the last several years.

It is devastating to the community.

An ER pediatric nurse I know, said, they average about one attempt per day at the suburban middle to upper class ER.

We just never know about our child's real thoughts.  Some kids can keep all their feelings and emotions and struggles and pain all bottled up and never say a word about anything.
My 14 year old has been this way for over a year.  It scares me to death that we won't open up about anything.  I worry

I knew a little boy, just 8 years old that committed suicide(by hanging himself). It was shocking and sad. I can't imagine what could have going on in his life where he thought taking his life was the answer.

I don't have answers but I do know kids and teens do not seem to have coping skills that kids and teens had 40 to 50 years ago for sure.  I know the world has changed but still they do not for sure.  Just talked to my friend who is a licensed therapist and she agrees for sure coping skills are something many don't have these days like people used to.  Our parents told us to suck it up and we did and were fine.

I have actually read a lot about this topic. And I agree with that mental health problems are increasing in today's youth. Some preliminary studies suggest it is related to the inability of children to make their own decisions. Meaning that parents who say, "you will make all A's, you will go to a good school, you will be in extra-curricular activities." are at higher risk of creating anxiety and coping problems.

I will disagree that telling kids to "suck it up" is a good strategy. Although, yes anxiety and depression are on the rise, statistics suggest there are quite a few of your generation who are not "really fine" either. Just because they didn't kill themselves, does not mean they represent the mental health. Look at the obesity, substance abuse, depression, relationship problems in any generation and I would argue there is a lot that needs to be learned about coping!

Telling people to suck it up is the problem.  Some people can't suck it up because it isn't always something that is fixed quite so easily.  Kids can have mental illness, depression.  Kids committed suicide 40 and 50 years ago.  I remember.  I was there.  A kid in our little 'hang out after school' group killed himself.  About 45 years ago I had a FOUR YEAR OLD come up to me and say he wanted to kill himself.
