so I have a 30 year old son been in and out of jail and prison for the last 10 years for drug charges and testing dirty during probation . today I learned that since he wont report to his probation officer hes staying in jail til his probation time is done . Bittersweet . At least I know hes alive and where he is !

True.  Is it possible that he's self-medicating a mental issue?  IMO, when a user can't stop, he/she is either self-medicating a mental issue or self-medicating to forget a traumatic event that occurred.
